St Vlas, also known as Sveti Vlas, is a laid back area of Bulgaria that is popular with families and couples looking for a quiet break. Home to Bulgaria’s first private marina, the area is popular with yatcher’s and other boat enthusiasts. With many restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes, St Vlas has no shortage of holiday options and is gaining in popularity.
Whilst many hotels in the region feature excellent standards of safety and hygiene, there is an unfortunate few that are not adequately maintained and have therefore been the subject of holiday illness claims.
Among the illnesses reported in St Vlas are forms of food poisoning including Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. Coli, all caused by coming into contact with infected food and water. Cryptosporidium is also an illness that can be contracted by coming into contact with pool water that can sometimes contain traces of infected faecal matter.
Although the tap water is safe to drink in Bulgaria all holiday makers visiting St Vlas are advised to drink only bottled water, as the local water may have an odd taste.
Whilst staying in St Vlas it is important to follow these guidelines to reduce the risk of food poisoning and other holiday illnesses:
- Avoid foods not cooked thoroughly and/or re-heated incorrectly.
- Avoid foods not prepared hygienically.
- Avoid food not stored at the correct temperature.
- Frequently use an alcohol-based hand gel.
- Avoid salads and any uncooked fruits and vegetables (these may have been handled unhygienically)
- Avoid swimming in water or pools that appear dirty and untreated.
