The most common is acute Otitis Media which is an infection within the middle ear, characterised by a severe earache, high temperature and mild deafness. Like an abscess, once the eardrum bursts and the pus comes out of the ear, the pain eases quite substantially. The eardrum almost always heals once the infection settles and hearing will usually return to normal.
Longer term problems can occur when such infections are frequent, as they can damage the eardrum or perhaps cause persistent deafness due to fluid that has gathered behind the eardrum (glue ear). In such cases, referral to a specialist is usually the best solution.
